Getting Started

First Launch

When you first open simpleMIDIController, you may be asked to grant Bluetooth access. This is required for Bluetooth MIDI connectivity.

Main Screen Overview

The main screen provides intuitive MIDI controls for live performance and studio use.

MIDI Connections

simpleMIDIController supports three connection methods:

Bluetooth MIDI

  1. Ensure your MIDI device is in Bluetooth MIDI pairing mode
  2. Open simpleMIDIController
  3. The app will discover available Bluetooth MIDI devices
  4. Tap to connect

Troubleshooting Bluetooth:

  • Toggle Bluetooth OFF/ON on your iPhone/iPad
  • Restart the MIDI device
  • Move devices closer to avoid interference
  • Ensure no other app is connected to the same MIDI device

USB MIDI

Connect USB MIDI devices using:

  • Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (for older iPhones/iPads)
  • USB-C (for newer devices)

USB MIDI devices are automatically detected when connected.

Virtual MIDI

Send MIDI to other apps on the same device:

  1. Enable Virtual MIDI in settings
  2. Select "simpleMIDIController" as the MIDI input in your target app (DAW, synth app, etc.)

Controller Interface

Control Types

simpleMIDIController provides various control types for different use cases:

  • Buttons: Send note on/off or control change messages
  • Sliders: Send continuous control change values
  • Pads: Velocity-sensitive triggers

Customization

Configure each control to send:

  • MIDI Channel (1-16)
  • Control number or note
  • Value range

Settings

MIDI Settings

  • MIDI Channel: Default channel for all controls
  • Velocity Curve: Adjust response sensitivity
  • Virtual MIDI: Enable/disable Virtual MIDI port

Bluetooth Settings

  • Auto-Connect: Automatically reconnect to last used device
  • Device List: View and manage paired Bluetooth MIDI devices

Tips & Tricks

For Best Performance

  1. Use Bluetooth wisely: Keep devices within 1-2 meters for best latency
  2. Reduce interference: Move away from Wi-Fi routers and USB 3.0 hubs
  3. Check battery: Low battery on either device can affect Bluetooth performance
  4. Close unused apps: Free up system resources for better stability

Troubleshooting

Bluetooth device not found

  • Ensure the device is in pairing mode
  • Toggle iPhone/iPad Bluetooth OFF/ON
  • Restart the MIDI device
  • Check if another app is using the device

High latency

  • Reduce distance between devices
  • Avoid interference sources
  • Use USB MIDI for lowest latency

Permission denied

  • Go to iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth
  • Enable permission for simpleMIDIController
